Poplar Bluff Man Building His Own Airplanes

POPLAR BLUFF, MO - A Poplar Bluff man has a hands-on love of airplanes.

Richard Bowie builds his own aircraft and has a landing strip in his southeast Missouri yard, located between Poplar Bluff and Dexter.

He used to be in a railroad bridge gang that traveled to different states to build tressles.  But he got tired of all the driving, so he learned to fly.

He later bought an airplane construction kit and has assembled several others in the years since.

Before he began building his own airplanes, he bought an aircraft that he crashed.  It can be seen these days at Bullwinkle's Rustic Lodge outside of Poplar Bluff.  He calls it a constant reminder to him, after he dropped to the ground when he ran out of gas.
