BATESVILLE, AR - Investigators with the Independence County Sheriff's Department are probing the apparent shooting death of a man on New Year's Day.

According to a police report, officers responded to 851 Camp Tahkodah Road at 3:31 a.m. "in reference to a call of someone being shot."  When officers arrived at the scene, they "made contact with a female at the residence next to a male subject lying on the ground.  The male subject was lying in a pool of blood and had no pulse."

The victim was identified as 32-year-old Serafin Moya Escoto, while the female with him was identified as his wife, 27-year-old Elizabeth Escoto.

Deputies say Serafin Escoto appeared to be the victim of a gunshot wound and the incident is being investigated as a "homicide."
