Grave of WWII Soldier Links Dutch Couple to Mid-South Vets

MEMPHIS, TN - In the Netherlands the Dutch have been adopting the graves of American soldiers since 1946.

That's what brought a couple to Memphis recently.

Stephan Geurts, 34, and his 37-year-old girlfriend Resi Pelen live in Valkenburg, a town that was liberated by Americans in World War II.

Two years ago they adopted the grave of Norman "Buddy" Hooker, an Army staff sergeant killed near the end of that war.

They visit his grave each Memorial Day and through the Internet they got in touch with Buddy's brother, Joe.

That brought them to Memphis this New Year to hear the stories of Buddy's war heroics.

The couple is expecting a baby and say they intend to pass the stories along.
