City Council Preview

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Tuesday night will be the first Jonesboro City Council and Public Safety Council meetings of 2008.

Tuesday night is going to be a busy night  at the Huntington building. With the public safety council meeting at five fifteen meeting to talk about such issues as banning the sale of novelty lighters here in Jonesboro. The city council meeting gets underway at six thirty. And once again our old friend drainage will be the main issue of the evening.

Ward 5 councilman Darrel Dover says, "Looking at the agenda I believe we have several items relating to drainage as far as purchasing property for a detention pond. Also accepting some easements then I think we have three ordnances for rezoning."

One of the big issues at the public safety committee meeting will be an ordinance to prohibit the sale of novelty lighters in Jonesboro.

There have been bans in other towns in Arkansas due to children playing with the lighters resulting in fatal fires.

Other issues at the public safety meeting will be utilities for the new fire stations and several property condemnations for demolition.

Along with the drainage issues, the council will consider approving appointments recommended by Jonesboro Mayor Doug Formon.

The meetings begin at 5:15 with the public safety committee meeting first, and then the city council meeting gets underway at six thirty. Of course the public is always invited so we want you to be there and take part in the running of your city.

Both meetings take place Tuesday evening at the Huntington building.

The public safety meeting will be held in the city council conference room behind the main council room.
