Worker Dies After Falling in Grain Bin

HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. (AP) - Emergency workers in Phillips County were unsuccessful in their efforts to rescue a man trapped in a grain bin Wednesday.

Sheriff Ronnie White said a worker at McAlister Grain in Helena-West Helena fell to the surface of the stored grain about 11 a.m. Wednesday as he tried to fix a clog. The sheriff said rescue workers cut holes in this bin and scooped out grain, trying to get to him.

At that time, rescue workers said Sylvester Jackson was still apparently alive. But they said the pulse they had detected during the rescue efforts faded and stopped about 7 p.m.

The 42-year-old Jackson was pastor of the Church of God in Christ in Holly Grove. He had worked at the grain plant for 20 years.

The sheriff said emergency workers in Phillips County, as well as the Marion Fire Department, helped with the rescue attempt.
