Man Gets 15 Years in SeMo Murder-For-Hire Plot

POPLAR BLUFF, MO - A 52-year-old southeast Missouri man is sentenced to 15 years in prison for a murder-for-hire plot.

Walter Lee Smith, Jr. of Poplar Bluff pleaded guilty to conspiring to kill a man Smith was accused of assaulting.  Authorities say the goal was to prevent the man from testifying against him.

Smith assaulted Mark Sullivan at Sullivan's home in November.  Sullivan is the live-in boyfriend of Smith's daughter.

Smith allegedly tried to stab Sullivan, who was able to prevent the stabbing but was still injured and had to be treated at a hospital.

Smith was jailed on the assault charge.  While there, authorities say he offered another inmate $1,000 to kill Sullivan.
