Schools Close, Roads Slicken in Parts of Region 8

CHEROKEE VILLAGE, AR (KAIT) - Temperatures warmed a few degrees, sparing most of Region 8 from frozen precipitation to start the day.

However, schools are closed or opening late in some northern portions of the viewing area, due to an overnight bout of freezing rain and/or sleet.  In Arkansas, Highland School District, Highland Wee Care, The Martin Center, and Maynard are all closed.  In Missouri, schools at Alton R-4, Oregon-Howell R-3, and Van Buren R-1 are closed.  Pocahontas and Viola schools in Arkansas are opening one hour late.

The Arkansas Department of Highways and Transportation is reporting ice patches on many northwest Arkansas roads, including Interstate-540 and U.S. 71.

A number of vehicles became stranded on I-540 last night, backing up traffic.  Authorities kept vehicles from part of the roadway for a time so crews could treat the surface.

A winter weather advisory remains in place for northwest Arkansas until 9 a.m.  The weather service says motorists should be on the lookout for slick spots on the roads.
