Blunt Won't Seek Re-Election

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - Governor Matt Blunt's announcement that he will not run for re-election this year has thrown Missouri politics into disarray.

Blunt revealed his change of plans yesterday, saying he has accomplished virtually everything he set out to do when he ran for governor four years ago.

The 37-year-old was expected to seek a second term and had raised millions of dollars for a potential re-election campaign.

But he has trailed in the polls to Democratic Attorney General Jay Nixon, who has been campaigning for governor for several years now.

Blunt released a video statement yesterday.  In it, he repeated assertions that he had balanced an out-of-whack state budget and boosted education spending.

He also spoke about how he has transformed the state's Medicaid health care system for the poor.
