Feds Studying Expansion of Federal Prison at Forrest City

FORREST CITY, AR - Forrest City civic leaders have been told that a high-security penitentiary could be built at the site where the federal Bureau of Prisons already operates three lockups.  Agency officials and a consultant company, the Louis Berger Group, announced plans Wednesday for a feasibility study for a prison that could house about 1,000 inmates and employ another 400 people.

The Federal Correctional Complex-Forrest City already employs 475 people and houses 4,020 prisoners in three units.  One is low-security, another is medium-security, and the third is a satellite camp.  The complex also includes staff-training buildings and other support structures.

The high-security prison would be the final phase of the BOP's original plan for the 943-acre site in southwest Forrest City that the government bought in 1992.
