Emerson May Plan Run for Governor

CAPE GIRARDEAU (KAIT) - Veteran southeast Missouri Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson may be mulling a run for governor of the Show-Me State.  The popular 8th District Congresswoman said this morning that she will announce Monday whether she will run for the office.

The Cape Girardeau Republican has been considering a bid since Governor Matt Blunt announced earlier this week that he will not seek re-election.  Emerson made the announcement at a meeting with southeast Missouri business and community leaders at the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce.

A new Internet blog that touts Emerson's candidacy was started yesterday.

Emerson has served southeast and southern Missouri in Congress since 1996, after she was elected in a special election to fill the seat vacated by the death of her husband, Bill Emerson, who succumbed to cancer in June of 1996.

If Emerson runs for governor, she will be the second Cape Girardeau Republican to do so.  Lt. Governor Peter Kinder announced earlier this week that he intends to seek the office.
