Storm Damages Mall in Memphis, People Trapped

MEMPHIS, TN - Memphsi police say the Hickory Ridge Mall and several other buildings in the area were struck by a severe storm, possibly a tornado, leaving "several parties" trapped in debris.

A dispatcher says the high winds, which she described as a tornado, collapsed the mall roof at the Sears store and possibly in other parts of the mall as well.

She says no deaths were reported, and the extent of injuries and damage was still being determined.

Earlier, authorities say a tornado touched down northeast of Memphis as part of a storm that swept across west Tennessee.  Authorities confirmed a tornado touched down near Arlington, about 25 miles northeast of downtown Memphis.  The twister knocked out a radio tower for the Tennessee Hwy. Patrol.

Power outages, downed trees and other storm damage were reported across Shelby County.
