Six Killed in Shooting at City Council Meeting in Suburban St. Louis

KIRKWOOD, MO - Five people were killed last night by a gunman who was fatally shot after opening fire at a meeting of the Kirkwood City Council in suburban St. Louis.

Authorities say two police officers and three people at the meeting were killed by a man who rushed the council chambers and began firing as he yelled "Shoot the mayor!"

The gunman was killed by Kirkwood police.

A police spokeswoman says the gunman killed one officer outside City Hall, then walked into the chambers and shot another.  He continued firing, killing three attendees and wounding two others.

Names of the victims haven't been released, but city officials say Mayor Mike Swoboda was wounded and was in critical condition late last night.

The gunman reportedly had a history of disputes with city leaders and had been convicted of disorderly conduct for disrupting meetings.
