FORT SMITH, AR - Two nursing homes in Arkansas are among the 131 nationwide on a list of "special focus facilities" because of their poor performance during government inspections.
The Medi-Home on Rogers Avenue in Fort Smith and Benson's Nursing Home in Nashville, Arkansas, were among those listed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which released the names yesterday.
The federal agency says Benson's has been on the list for a year and has shown improvement.
Benson administrator Gynder Benson said the home has installed a new fire alarm system, emphasized to staff members the importance of following policies, and instituted new policies to ensure that residents don't go outside without supervision.
Benson said being removed from the list will be a big morale boost for the staff.
Medi-Home has been on the list for five months. A spokesman for the home was not immediately available for comment.
Randy Wyatt of the Arkansas Health Care Association says both homes are making progress.
