Theft Charges Formally Filed Against Westside Shooter

BENTONVILLE, AR - Mitchell Johnson, one of the men who killed five people in a 1998 school shooting in Jonesboro, faces two new felony charges for allegedly stealing a credit card as he awaits sentencing in a separate federal trial.

A federal jury convicted Johnson of a weapons charge in January.  Four days later, Bentonville police arrested Johnson after officers said they found a small amount of marijuana in his possession while he worked as a clerk at a local gas station.

Charges filed yesterday in Benton County Circuit Court allege Johnson took a debit card left by a disabled man who purchased a pack of cigarettes at a Fast Trip gas station in Bentonville.  Police say the card had been used to make several purchases, including at the gas station and at a Burger King restaurant.

Johnson faces felony theft charges of theft by receiving and financial identity fraud.  Together, the two charges carry a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and fines up to $25,000.
