Newport High School Star Athlete Arrested

NEWPORT, AR -- (KAIT) -- A Region 8 high school star athlete and three other juveniles are in trouble with the law facing felony charges.

18 year old Newport High School star running back Nico Cox is in jail after police say he was involved in a fight where shots were fired.

"The officer spoke with several witnesses at the scene, including the victim who identified each of the people that had assaulted him," said Detective Sergeant Patrick Weatherford, Newport Police Department.

Police say the fight happended outside a home on Hout Circle in Newport around five o clock on Wednesday.

The 18 year old victim told police Nico Cox pistol whipped him before Cox left the scene.

As Mr. Cox was running away, according to the victim and witnesses, he fired a few rounds into the air. He was located near the scene. He fled, but was located and he did not have a weapon at the time," said Weatherford.

Police say the weapon has not been located.

Injuries to the victim are not believed to be life threatening.

"The victim did not require any medical treatment that we are aware of. He was not treated by the ambulance or transported to the hospital at the time of the incident," said Weatherford.

Nico Cox will remain behind bars at the Jackson County Detention Center until his bond hearing scheduled for Friday.

Police are not releasing the names of the three other juveniles alledgedly involved in Wednesday afternoon's fight.

Police will say they have been released to their guardians.

All four people police say were involved in the fight are students at Newport High School.

Neither the schools superintendent or Nico Cox's coach would comment on the incident.

Police say it's still unclear what started the fight.

Nico Cox is facing 2 counts of aggravated assault and an aggravated riot charge.

They are all Class D felonies.

Nico Cox has been regocnized numerous times for his accomplishments on the football field.

He was named the KAIT Coach's Superteam Player of the Year, Hooten's 4-A Player of the year, and he was also selected to play in the Arkansas High School All-Star game this summer.
