Ice Storm Expected to Cost $1.2 Million in One SeMo Community

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - This month's ice storm in Jackson will cost the southeast Missouri city $1.2 million.

Trees, electric wires and more than 50 poles buckled and snapped under the weight of up to an inch of ice that fell February 11 and 12.

City administrator Jim Roach said Jackson has applied for more some reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In the meantime, bills will be paid from the city's electric surplus fund of $6 million.

Poles and wires were damaged in the 2003 tornado, but insured buildings bore the brunt of destruction.
