Walnut Ridge Fire Department to Receive $114K Grant

WALNUT RIDGE, AR (KAIT) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)  has awarded $114,303 grant to the Walnut Ridge Fire Department.

The grant is an AFG, or Assistance to Firefighters Grant.  Nationally, AFG awards provide close to $490 million to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations throughout the U.S.

The goal of an AFG award is to "enhance response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public with respect to fire and other hazards."  The grant will allow the Walnut Ridge Fire Department to purchase training, conduct first responder health and safety programs and to buy equipment and vehicles for use.

"The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program has been instrumental in building capacity and providing needed resources for our nation's firefighters." said FEMA Administrator R. David Paulison.

Since 2004, AFG has awarded almost $32.13 billion to fire departments and first responders to buy equipment, vehicles and training.

AFG is administered by two FEMA components cooperatively: the National Preparedness Directorate and the United States Fire Administration.
