Wisconsin Man Collapses, Dies after Finishing 26-Mile Little Rock Marathon

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Little Rock Marathon officials say a Wisconsin man has collapsed and died after completing the 26.2 mile race.

A news release from race officials said 27-year-old Adam Nickel of Madison, Wisconsin, collapsed Saturday morning shortly after he finished the cross line of the race.  Emergency personnel used mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to try and revive Nickel until an ambulance arrived with a defibrillatotor.  He could not be revived and was pronounced dead after being taken to the UAMS Hospital.

The medical director of the marathon, Dr. Kent Davidson, said at a news conference that no determination had been made yet on what caused Nickel's death.  Davidson said emergency personnel never detected a heart rythym the whole time they tried to resuscitate the man.

The race, which attracted about 9,000 entrants, was the sixth running of the Little Rock Marathon.  Nickel's death was the first in the history of the event.
