Reports of Shooting Incident Near Movie Store in Batesville

BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) - An attempted break in of a car turned into a shooting Monday night in Batesville.

According to Sheriff Keith Bowers, authorities responded to Wal-Mart in reference to someone breaking into a car.  Officers were told that the suspect was being held by the owner of the vehicle, but when officers arrived, the suspect ran.  An officer pursued him down an embankment.

When the officer caught up to the suspect, the male turned towards the officer and pointed a gun toward him.  When he told the officer to stop chasing him or he would shoot him, the officer drew his weapon and advised the suspect to drop his firearm.

After the suspect refused, the officer shot him twice.

The suspect was transported to White River Medical Center and later to the Med trauma center in Memphis.

State police are still investigating the shooting.  The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on leave, but Sheriff Bowers says this is due to policy.

The names of the officer and the suspect have not been released.
