Caruthersville Man Arrested for Assault on Kennett Cop

KENNETT, MO - A Caruthersville man has been arrested and charged with a felony after he allegedly assaulted a Kennett police officer.

According to a police report, 28-year-old Silas Smith, Jr. began striking officer Mark Dennis as Dennis tried to arrest the suspect following a traffic stop Saturday night on the South Bypass in Kennett.  Police say Smith was stopped by Dennis for having only one operational headlight on his vehicle.  Following the stop, Smith allegedly got out of his car and began cursing the officer, and then threatened to kill him.  As Dennis attempted to handcuff the suspect, Smith allegedly began to strike the officer.

Two other officers soon arrived at the scene and assisted Dennis in subduing Smith and placing him under arrest.
