Jetton Apologizes to SeMo County for "Lazy" Remark

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - House Speaker Rod Jetton says he was wrong to name a southeast Missouri county as an example of "lazy Missourians" he would like to trade for hardworking Mexicans.

Jetton had said a company came to Wayne County because it had the state's highest unemployment rate and could find only three job applicants.

But Jetton now says that he learned there were 300 applicants and wishes he had checked his facts first.

Jetton says he doesn't support illegal immigration and is frustrated by those who have become dependent upon public assistance.

The Marble Hill Republican still says some "lazy Missourians" could learn from the "hardworking immigrants who have come to America for a better life."
