Neighborhood Floods; People Drying Out

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) -- Residents all across Region 8 are experiencing heavy flooding due to Tuesday night's storms.  However, one Jackson County neighborhood that hasn't been flooded at all is now dealing with a surprise.

A flood gate wasn't closed all the way Wednesday night because a log and a tire were underneath it.  This blockage left a six to eight inch gap for the water to escape, and now a neighborhood is flooded.

"This is a lot of water.  A lot of water," said Barbara Ross.

"I thought it was in the house.  She told me to look outside and the water was just everywhere," said R.D. Brown, Jr.

People on in one Newport neighborhood woke up Thursday morning to find the river in their front yards and in their cars.

"It was just kind of a shock.  I've never seen anything like this before," said Ross.

"The house was flooded out, cars flooded out.  You can't go though you can't come back though.  This is a busy street and nobody can get through," said Brown.

A lot of houses are stranded like islands with up to a foot of water standing between them and dry land.

"The water is clear up to the door.  If you are just stepping out of your home you're stepping in the water," said Steven Rucker.

Multiple cars are almost completely under the water so residents are not only stranded, but many may not be able to go anywhere even after the water recedes.

"Some people lost their cars.  The water ruined that and there are a lot of things to look at," said Ross.

While the water is already starting to go down and some residents are already drying out it will take a while for this neighborhood to fully recover.
