Booneville Re-Evacuated after Meat Plant Blast

BOONEVILLE, AR - State emergency management officials say police today ordered those within a half-mile radius of a Booneville meat packing plant to evacuate, a day after a fire and explosion forced an earlier evacuation.

Emergency management spokeswoman Sonya Davis says the order came out because firefighters worry that a tank containing about 2,000 gallons of anhydrous ammonia at the Cargill Meat Solutions plant could be threatened by smoldering debris.

Firefighters were unable to fight the Sunday afternoon blaze because of dangers posed by the estimated 88,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia stored at the plant.

Sunday's fire destroyed the 150,000-square-foot facility.
