Science Project Over 20 Years in the Making

SEATTLE, WA (KAIT) - Alaskan native, Merle Brandall was beachcombing along the Bering Sea when he found something strange in the sand. An old bottle with a written letter inside was lying among the sand.

The letter read:

"This letter is part of our science project to study oceans and learn about people in distant lands. Please send the date and location of the bottle with your address. I will send you my picture and tell you when and where the bottle was placed in the ocean. Your friend, Emily Hwaung."

Brandall then went to search for the elementary school Hwaung attended only to find out that it had closed down a while back. He then found out Emily had aged a bit since the letter was written.

Hwaung was in 4th grade when the letter was written. Now in her 30s, Emily Hwaung is now Emily Shih and was amazed to find out the whereabouts of her science project many years ago.

"I've been getting a kick out it for a month now," Shih says.

The letter had traveled over 1,735 miles from Seattle, Washington to Alaska.
