MEMPHIS, TN - A special prosecutor investigating an alleged blackmail plot targeting Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton has sent the mayor a draft report of his findings.
Herenton claimed last year that powerful businessmen tried to frame him in a sex sting.
Former cocktail waitress Gwendolyn Smith alleges that businessmen offered her money in an unconsummated plot to lure Herenton into a videotaped sexual encounter.
Former Williamson County District Attorney Joe Baugh, accompanied by two agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, met with Herenton for about two hours last week. Baugh declined to comment to The Daily News.
Herenton was re-elected to his fifth consecutive four-year term in January, though he said last week he plans to resign if he can become superintendent of city schools.
