Former Gubernatorial Candidate Dies

LEXA, AR - Walter L. Carruth, a one-time gubernatorial candidate for the American Independent Party of Arkansas in 1970, has died.  He was 76.

Carruth died Sunday at his farm in Phillips County.  A former Phillips County justice of the peace, Carruth ran against Democrat Dale Bumpers and Republican incumbent Winthrop Rockefeller in the gubernatorial race.

Carruth finished with 36,132 votes, compared with 375,648 votes for Bumpers and 197,418 for Rockefeller.  Carruth also served as chairman of the Arkansas branch of the American Independent Party.
