Region 8 Files Last Minute Taxes

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -- The deadline for filing your income taxes is here.

"I know I dread it.  I've never met anyone who enjoys doing their taxes," said Josh Potter.

On Tuesday the line at the post office stretched all the way to the door.

"There's a lot of traffic out there.  The parking lot is full.  Everybody's waiting to get their taxes done," said Gary Williams.

This is one of the busiest days of the year for a lot of people.

"This is the first time I've ever filed and mailed mine off on the fifteenth.  Usually I'm one of the people who already have their taxes in the mail by January or February, but this year I had to pay in so I decided to wait till the last day," said Sandy Turner.

And that's exactly what most of the people that are filing their taxes right at the deadline are saying.

"It's a tradition I think with some people.  If you have to pay why not wait till the last day?" said Dorothy McCarns.

"I just put it off to the last minute.  That's the last thing I want to do is pay taxes.  Now, the people getting refunds, they're the first to do it.  However, those of us fortunate enough to pay, we want to wait till the last minute," said Gene Williams.

With rising costs for just about everything, some of these tax payers have said the sluggish economy is partially to blame.

"The economy is a little bit depressed right now and I think a lot of people just don't have the money until the last minute," said Gary Roberts.

While the line was pretty steady all day long the real rush should start after people get off work.

"I figure it will be real busy later on," said Dorothy McCarns.

"Come early.  I wouldn't wait until five minutes to midnight.  I'm sure it will be a long line at that point for folks who have procrastinated," said Turner.

People expecting a refund can look forward to their next visit to the post office when they get that check in the mail.
