State Denies Westside's Request to be Removed from 'Fiscally Distressed' List

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Bad news today for the Westside School District in Craighead County.  The state Board of Education this afternoon denied the district's appeal request to be removed from the state's list of "fiscally distressed" schools.

Westside administrators learned their district had been added to the list early last month.  Now, the district must remain on the list, due to an apparent declining bank balance, until at least next year.

There was good news for three Region 8 school districts today.  The Midland, Hughes and Turrell districts were removed from the same designation.

School districts placed in fiscal distress by the state have up to two years to submit a plan showing how they will remove themselves from the classification, have the plan approved and then successfully implement the steps.  Then, the district can petition the board to be removed from the list.
