Shooting Leaves Man Injured, Suspect Turns Himself In To Police

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- Jonesboro police are looking for a shooting victim, they say, could provide them with necessary information on what they're calling an accidental shooting.

Leroy Smith, 48, of Jonesboro left Craighead County court Thursday facing several charges.

According to Jonesboro police, Smith admits he shot Anton Eskridge, of Jonesboro, Wednesday outside an apartment at  2110 Cedar Heights Dr.

"He told the officers that he'd accidentally shot someone while trying to sell them a pistol," said JPD detective, Chris Poe.

But, that shooting victim has yet to come forward to police.

"If the victim comes forward and says that there was some other reason for the shooting, then their could be some additional charges," said Poe.

Witnesses say Eskridge walked into St. Bernards emergency room for treatment of a gunshot wound to the hand and then walked out when staff informed him police would be called.

Poe says that could be because Eskridge is a wanted man. He's got a warrant on failure to appear.

"We'd appreciate any help we can so we can at least get a statement from him."

As for Smith, police say he did the right thing by turning himself in.

"He knew what he did was wrong and that he was going to have to face the music."

Police say Harrisburg police contacted them Thursday afternoon to say Eskridge called them because that's where he has warrants.

Still, police ask you to call them if you know of his whereabouts.

Smith's next court appearance is May 29th. He's charged with posession of a firearm and failure to register as a sex offender.

He's had three prior felony firearms charges.
