Boy Drowns in Buffalo River

HARRISON, AR - Authorities say a 7-year-old boy drowned in the Buffalo River after the canoe he and his mother were riding in capsized and got pinned under a tree, trapping him.

Will Davenport was floating the Buffalo River Sunday with his mother, Lori Davenport, when their canoe got stuck, officials with the Buffalo National River said.  They were floating near the unincorporated community of Erbie in Newton County.

The Newton County Sheriff's Office responded, and rescuers were able to release the canoe using a chain saw.  The boy was taken by helicopter to North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday.
