CARLISLE, AR - Governor Mike Beebe says he wants to encourage schools to install so-called tornado-safe rooms after the latest set of storms ran through the state last week.
Speaking to reporters in Carlisle this afternoon, Beebe said some of the funding could come from additional money set aside by the state Legislature for repairs to school buildings.
However, Beebe acknowledged the decision would remain up to the school districts, but said Carlisle offered a good example of why those safe rooms are important.
One tornado spawned from a storm system last week ran right up to the campus of the Carlisle elementary and high schools. Administrators say all the school's 750 students were safely inside secured interior hallways when the storm blew through.
