Gas Prices Leading Some to Bike to Work

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - With gas prices so high, some Tennessee cities are dealing with thieves who fill up at the pump then drive off without paying.

Officials say the thefts will only drive the price of gas up even higher.

"It's not fun, but it's necessary," driver Carlos Watts said of the high prices. "There's nothing we can do about it."

The alternatives to filling up include taking the bus or walking.  Chris Riley rides his bike.

"I don't have to worry about putting gas in it," he said. "Only thing you gotta worry about is air."

It's the kind of thinking about high gas prices got Daniel Duckworth thinking, too.  The owner of Midtown Bike Company, Duckworth is using high gas prices as a business strategy, even posting the math from the cost of a daily commute on his company's website.

"People- fifty plus- have been coming in, perhaps bringing in an old dusty bike, or perhaps buying a new one to start commuting on," he said.

Duckworth added that two wheels to work makes perfect sense.

"Something's gotta give, so naturally I think the combination of cycling as transportation as well as exercise is a win-win," Duckworth said.

But back on the road, some drivers said they plan to stick with four wheels. Regardless of the pain at the pump.
