FAYETTEVILLE, AR - The former Washington County jail has been transformed into a new detention center for female inmates convicted of nonviolent offenses.
Officials dedicated the new Northwest Arkansas Community Correction Center Wednesday. The center now holds 50 inmates, referred to by corrections officials as "residents." Most were convicted of drug-related offenses.
The department has similar centers in Texarkana, Osceola, North Little Rock and Pine Bluff, though only the Pine Bluff center is for women. The centers focus on behaviour modification and provide an alternative to a traditional prison sentence.
