Lightning Strikes Church, Starts Fire in Butler County

BROSLEY, MO (KAIT) - A Butler County church was destroyed after being struck by lightning on Tuesday night.

Butler County Fire Chief Bob Fredwell said neighbors in the Brosley area heard the lightning bolt hit.  Minutes later, they noticed the Landreth Chapel Church was on fire.

Fire crews responded quickly, but much of the building had already been destroyed by the time firefighters arrived, primarily due to smoke damage.

Reverend Don Cox said most of the items inside were ruined, though a few Bibles might be salvaged.

According to Chief Fredwell, parts of the chapel date back to 1953.

The church's services will temporarily be held at a facility in Poplar Bluff.
