Woman Dies In Iron Lung

MEMPHIS, TN (KAIT) - A Memphis woman died Wednesday from a power failure.

Dianne Odell has spent most of her life in an iron lung. She has been in it since she was three years old when she was diagnosed with polio.

The machine kept her breathing, without it she wouldn't survive.

Due to a power failure, the iron lung shut off temporarily, killing the woman.

Family members attempted to get a backup generator working for Odell, but failed.

Even though she lived in an iron lung her entire life, Odell had the time not only to graduate high school, but write a children's book. She was cared for by her family her entire life.

Dianne Odell was 61 years old.
