Copper Thieves Make Big Heist in Walnut Ridge

WALNUT RIDGE, AR (KAIT) - Region 8's growing wave of copper thefts continues, and this time the culprits have struck in Lawrence County.

LawCo Sheriff Dan Ellison told Region 8 News that thieves made away with approximately $2,000 worth of copper wire and tubing early this morning after breaking into the Craighead Electric maintenance facility on U.S. 412, just outside of the Walnut Ridge city limits.  The theft apparently occured sometime shortly after midnight.

Ellison said a male and female suspect were both apprehended this morning in Corning following a traffic stop.  No formal charges have been filed yet, and the names of the suspects have not been released.

On a related matter, the sheriffs of Crittenden, Cross and St. Francis counties will meet this afternoon in Wynne with Senator Blanche Lincoln about the copper theft problem in those respective counties.
