Vacation Economics

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)-  The beach, the ocean, and the sunshine; it's time for summer vacation.

But are recent economic woes halting family vacations?

Some say not!

"Some people think, by golly, I've worked hard all year. I need a vacation. I need to get away."

So travel agents like Emelda Williams who owns Travel With Us in Jonesboro says business hasn't decreased all that much.

"It may be coming down the pike, but so far business has continued as usual," said Williams.

But that doesn't mean the cost of trips aren't necessarily going up as fuel costs continue to rise.

Williams says the trick is to get the most bang for your buck!

"When you are going to travel, look for the places that are all-inclusive or in package deals," said Williams.

She says this will save you money because the rates are locked and won't change.

And for the do it yourselfers, the internet is a great resource, but Wlliams suggests checking with a travel agency, because sometimes they can still save you a little more.

"You can go on the internet and look these things over. We encourage you to. Then come to us, and talk to us about it. In many case, we can find a good deal that maybe you couldn't find, because we have access to a lot more things," said Williams.

And more importantly than anything, when planning your family vacation, no matter your budget, simply use your better judgement.

"Be a careful traveler, a smart traveler. There are tips when you go through the airport. There are tips to get through security. There's a lot of things you can do to make your job a lot easier," said Williams.

Williams tells me that it costs no more to make your vacation plans through a travel agency than it does through an internet site, because they charge similar fees.

She says the advantage is having a real person to talk to and answer any questions you might have.
