Clean-Up To Begin after 50 Dead Hogs Found in SeMo Barn

SCOTT CITY, MO - Cleanup is expected to begin this week after more than 50 dead hogs were found in a metal barn on an abandoned southeast Missouri farm.

The Scott County Sheriff's Department is investigating after the discovery last Tuesday.  Possible criminal charges range from neglect of the animals to improperly disposing of them.

Officials believe the hogs died in February, after an ice storm left the farm without power for four days.

The sheriff's department said the hogs had no food, no water and lacked adequate ventilation.  Officials say that lack of ventilation could have resulted in asphyxiation from ammonia fumes from waste.

Authorities say an Illinois man owned the farm before relinquishing it to a bank.  His name was not released.
