Region 8 Pools Open For Summer, Safety On The Minds Of Parents

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT)- In Memphis, two teenagers drowned Saturday at two different city pools. That's resulted in the shutting down of all city pools until further notice.

We asked parents here in Region 8 what they think. Are pools safe places for their kids to go?

Elizabeth Martin is the mother of four-year-old Evan and eight-year-old Isaac.

She brings her two sons to Paragould's Aquatic Center.

"With two at different ages, it's hard to watch them all the time because one will be going down the slide, while the other will be in the kiddie pool," said Martin. "It's just nice to know that there's someone watching."

The aquatic center has a strict policy in place that keeps parents or guardians of young children with them at all times.

"We need a parent here," said Pat Austin, Paragould Parks & Recreation Director. "We have our guards but we also need a parent here to be with the smaller children."

Here, there are at least 10 lifeguards on duty at any given time. But as Austin says, differing pool depths and water features make their presence all the more necessary.

"We felt like we needed more guards there coming down the slides, top of the slides, at the diving board," said Austin.

While Martin says she never leaves her kids out of her sight, in case that does happen, she says there are always plenty of watchful eyes.

"He jumped in a while ago, and somebody came in and snatched him up," she said. "It's nice to know that there are other people watching."

Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult at Paragould's Aquatic Center. The pool's capacity is 586.
