Legislative Race Turns into Fight Among Political Heavyweights

CONWAY, AR - Former President Clinton and former Governor Mike Huckabee are lending their names to a race for the Legislature that's becoming political battle in Arkansas.

The contest has attracted the attention of the state's two favorite political sons in a year when none of the imcumbent congressmen seeking re-election in Arkansas face major party opponents.  Democrat Joe White's bid to unseat incumbent Senator Gilbert Baker has already become the most expensive legislative race in the state this year, with both candidates raising nearly $500,000 combined.

Huckabee hopes to up that ante with a fundraiser for Baker in Greenbriar tonight.  The former governor has also pledged to support Baker with the help of his political action committee.

Not to be outdone, White announced this week that Clinton had given the maximum $4,000 to his primary and general election campaigns.  White said the cost of the race has already surpassed what he had expected when he announced his bid last year.
