MEMPHIS, TN - Preliminary FBI figures show property crimes dropped in Memphis, but the city leads the nation's large cities in the rate of them.
Preliminary data contained in the Uniform Crime Report shows there were 8,059 property crimes per 100,000 residents in 2007.
That's a drop of 5.3 percent in 2006.
The rate led all U.S. cities with populations between 500,000 and 1 million.
Second was Columbus, Ohio, followed by Charlotte, North Carolina; Detroit and Milwaukee.
Criminologist Richard Janiknowski told The Commercial Appeal the ranking could be misleading because Memphis police report all thefts while some other cities report only losses starting at $500 value.
