Jonesboro, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro police are investigating a number of at least five drug-related overdoses that have occured in the city since midnight Tuesday morning.
"Quite frankly, it may turn into a homicide investigation as it goes on. Like I said, we just don't know at this point, it's very early in the investigation but it is very, very serious," said Chief Mike Yates of the Jonesboro Police Department.
Yates warns that an unidentified narcotic could be circulating around the city of Jonesboro.
Jonesboro police say those hospitalized are between the ages of 26-29.
Police say the victims were listed in critical condition after being admitted to the hospital after the ingestion of the unidentified narcotic.
While the specific drug or drugs involved has not yet been named, at least one victim told police he thought he was buying cocaine.
Yates says all of the cases appear to be related to some type of illicit drug, possibly "a cocaine or meth substitute."
"There appears to be some type of dangerous substance making its way around the streets right now," said Yates. "You can't be sure of anything you're aquiring on the streets and what you're getting may kill you. I would say that the possibility of one or more of these individuals may not survive this. It is certainly a concern and a possibility."
Chief Yates did specify that they are focusing the investigation in areas of the city north of Washinton Avenue.
