Beebe to Oppose Immigration Measure in '09

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Governor Mike Beebe says he'll still oppose a measure aimed at denying state services to illegal immigrants if legislators introduce a proposal next year similar to one that failed to make it onto this fall's ballot.

Secure Arkansas, the group that formed to back the immigration proposal, announced Monday that it couldn't gather enough signatures to place the initiated act on November's ballot.  The group said it would instead lobby lawmakers to pass the restrictions next year.

Beebe had opposed the ballot measure, which would have required government agencies to verify that everyone seeking public benefits in the state is a legal U.S. resident.
