Cropduster Crashes Near State Prison in Jackson County

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - There were no injuries late this morning when a cropduster crashed shortly before noon today in a corn field near the McPherson/Grimes units of the Arkansas Dept. of Corrections near Newport, in Jackson County.

The accident occured at approximately 11:45 a.m.  A spokeswoman with the Arkansas Dept. of Emergency Management said the pilot was not injured, and the prison has not been affected by the mishap.

The plane was carrying approximately 50 to 100 pounds of ammonium nitrate in pellet form.  There was no fuel spilled in the accident, according to the ADEM spokeswoman.
