Clay County Sheriff, Business Owner at Odds over County Records

PIGGOTT, AR (KAIT) - A court hearing that was scheduled for today in Clay County has been delayed after Circuit Judge David Laser granted a continuance in the case late yesterday.

The court action came about as the result of a dispute that arose last week between Sheriff Ronnie Cole and Van Winton, the owner of Clay County Abstract and Title Insurance in Piggott.  The hearing was scheduled after Winton sought and received a temporary injunction on July 25, after Cole allegedly denied Winton access to county tax records.

Last Friday, Laser granted the temporary injunction in Winton's favor after hearing the complaint.  The order stated that Cole was temporarily enjoined and restrained from requiring the plaintiff to make an appointment to access the county's tax records until the matter can be heard.

Winton is being represented by local attorney Lisa Davis.
