Police Officer's Child Accidentally Shoots Herself

FORT SMITH, AR - The six-year-old daughter of a police officer accidentally shot herself with a handgun from the Fort Smith Police Department.  Police spokesman Captain David Overton says the girl's injuries were "non life-threatening."

Police responded to a call about 5:45 p.m. yesterday to a Fort Smith residence and found the daugher of Captain Larry Rannells had shot herself with a semi-automatic issued by the police department.  She was taken to St. Edward Hospital then transferred to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.

Overton says department employees' thoughts and prayers are with the Rannells family.
