Jonesboro Awarded $220K for Safe Routes to Schools

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The city of Jonesboro has received $220,441 from the Arkansas Highway Commission for the Arkansas Safe Routes to Schools program.

The 2008 grant was written by a coalition of city and public school leaders, to fund sidewalks, solar-powered school zone flashers, and pedestrian crosswalk flashers near K-8 schools in Jonesboro.

Jonesboro received only a portion of the funds it requested, however.  City officials will meet with school administrators in the coming weeks to determine which projects are considered high priority.  Project construction won't begin until next summer.
