5 Children Among 7 Killed in Memphis House Fire

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Memphis Fire Department says five children, an adolescent and an adult have died in a house fire. Lt. Keith Staples told The Associated Press that firefighters don't yet know the ages or gender of the victims. He said the cause of the fire, which broke out about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, isn't yet known.

Fire officials say that search crews discovered the bodies after extinguishing the flames. Three others - two teenagers and a child- suffered burns and were sent to the hospital. A 16-year-old male and 17-year-old female were sent to the burn unit of Regional Medical Center. An 11-year-old male was reported as being taken to LeBonheur (leh-BON'-uhr) Children's Medical Center.

Staples said firefighters aren't sure yet how the three were able to escape the house. Firefighters were continuing to investigate at the scene in the Orange Mound neighborhood of Memphis.
