Confederate Widow Dies in Arkansas

LEXA, Ark. (AP) - A Confederate widow in Arkansas has died. Maudie White Hopkins was only 19 when poverty compelled her to marry Confederate veteran William M. Cantrell. He was 86. They were married in Baxter County for only three years before he passed away. Hopkins later remarried and had three children.

She said in an Associated Press interview in 2004 that Cantrell was a good man and kind to her. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at age 16 in Kentucky, and was captured the same year and sent to a prison camp in Ohio. He was later exchanged for a Northern prisoner, and after the war moved to Arkansas to live with relatives.

Hopkins died Sunday at a hospital near her home in Lexa. She was 93. Graveside services are scheduled for tomorrow at Lexa.
