Expansion Of Craighead County Detention Center Almost Complete

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT ) -- It's been a work in progress since November of last year, but the expansion of the booking area in the Craighead County Detention Center is almost complete. The area is for the intake and release of prisoners.

"Officials are hopeful with the expanded booking area and more room to work, employees will be able to process information about the inmates.

"It was very dangerous in the old area because when you have 30 inmates just loose and lined up down the hallway, anything can happen. We were very fortunate we never had a major incident," said Craighead County Sheriff, Jack McCann.

"Jail expansions are just a part of growth," said Dale Haas.

Craighead County Judge Dale Haas and Quorum Court Members toured the new booking area on Monday night. The project cost nearly two-million dollars, but Judge Haas says it's worth every cent if a life is saved through improved security in this area.

"They can be more secure, especially the mentally ill patients. There's a way to secure them here that we didn't have previously, and we can handle booking a whole lot easier than what we could in the past," said Haas.

The project was paid for through the capitol improvements fund. The addition is expected to be open and processing suspects hopefully by the end of the month. The old booking area will be apart of remodeling being done at the sheriff's department.
